My Amazing Race Record

In Rimu Class, we have just started doing The Amazing Race, which is technically a reading project. We have to read Chapter Books. Each time we finished a book we had to write a summary about it and then record a fact about each country. I hope you enjoy my facts, please comment on this. Thanks!

Edna Pengelly's Timeline

This Term I started making a timeline of one of the nurses who went to WW1 (World War 1).
Her name was Edna Pengelly. I found out a lot of information about what her life was like before, during and after the war.

Edna Pengelly Timeline

1874-1959

1874-- Edna Pengelly was born in Canada on 5 July 1874.

1902-- In 1902 Pengelly and her mother moved to Levin and started a poultry farm.

1904-- She began her training at Wellington District Hospital on 1 January 1904.

1907-- After completing her training in 1907, Edna Pengelly supervised various wards at

Wellington District Hospital.

1909-1915-- After completing her training in 1907, Edna Pengelly supervised various wards at Wellington District Hospital.

 

1915-- Edna Pengelly applied to join the New Zealand Army Nursing Service.

1915-1919-- Pengelly served at military hospitals in Egypt and England.

1919-- She was awarded the Royal Red Cross second class in 1917 and first class in 1919.

1919-- After returning to New Zealand, she was matron of the Queen Mary Military Hospital, a rehabilitation centre at Hanmer Springs, until 1921.

1924-1928--  She was president of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Trained Nurses' Association.

1929--  Edna Pengelly became matron of the Wanganui Collegiate School.

1937-- She returned to Wellington to be near her mother.

1941-- Retiring from nursing in 1941, Pengelly continued to be a member of the New Zealand Registered Nurses' Association.

1956-- Her diaries were published in 1956, as Nursing in peace and war, provide one of the few accounts of a New Zealand nurse's military experiences in the First World War.

1959-- She died on 20 August 1959 at Wellington Hospital, where she had commenced her training some 55 years earlier.

Week 4: Chapters 13

Chapter 13: Denzil Faces the Dragon

1. How has the relationship between Sam and Theresa changed? Why?

(Sam and Theresa are now friends because …. they both said sorry to each other.      √

2. Read to the bottom of page 130. Predict: What has happened to make Denzil and Travis so

late? Explain in at least 20 words and give reasons.

(Denzil and Travis are late because …. Travis lost Denzil and he was looking for Denzil for hours and everyone was worried      √

3. Why did Denzil disappear?

(Denzil disappeared because …. of the police siren.      √

4. Sam works out what the dragon is. What is it? What are the 3 clues she uses to work this out?

(Sam works out that the dragon is really a train because it has blazing eye, a roar and rails with long claws.      √

5. Why doesn’t Denzil run from the dragon?

(Denzil doesn’t run from the dragon because ….he is frozen with fear.      √

Chapter 14: The Witch’s Secret

1. What has changed about the way that Denzil thinks about Sam? Why has there been this change?

Week 3: Chapters 9 to 12

Chapter 9: Seeing Stars

1. Why doesn’t Mr MacAllister trust Denzil?

(Mr MacAllister does not trust Denzil because ….he lied and has been burgling.   YES

2. Why was Denzil so fascinated by TV and the movie ‘Star Wars’?

(Denzil was fascinated by TV and star wars because ….it was like a whole different world.  YES

3. What might happen if Denzil sees all these fantastic things and then returns to where he came from?

(If Denzils sees these things and then returns home, then this is what might happen: …. he might take himself to the galaxy.  HE might change history by telling what he had seen.

4. What happened to make Mr MacAllister so happy?

(Mr MacAllister is happy because ….everyone wants to see him perform things.  YES

5. At the end of the chapter, everyone groaned when Mrs MacAllister said that she would like to keep Denzil. What are 3 positive and 3 negative things about having Denzil living with the family?

(The 3 positive things about having Denzil stay are: he likes to watch Mr MacAllister perform, he makes everybody feel happy and made Mr MacAllister get Adams good points.      √      √      √

(The 3 negative things about having Denzil stay are: he makes a huge mess, he believes in things that aren’t true and      √      √   He can go a little crazy at times.

6. Predict what is going to happen to Denzil and the dragon:

(This is what I think will happen in the rest of the story: I think Denzil will get the medallion back and make it back to the village and he would’ve gone to Rue Wednesday and seen Valvasor, when he gets back there will be damage at Valvasor’s house.

Chapter 10: Problems and Surprises

1. Why was Adam having so much trouble working out Denzil’s calculations?

(Adam was having trouble with the calculations because ….he knew he

had to make Denzil go back seven-hundred and twenty years.      √

2. Who was Judas?       You might have to look in the class encyclopedia

(Judas was one of the twelve original disciples of Jesus Christ, who is

known for the kiss and the betrayal of Jesus to the Sanhedrin for thirty silver coins.      √ I love your detail here, Laura.

3. How does Denzil react when he is smacked by Adam? Why?

(When Adam smacks him, Denzil kicks and fights because ….he wants to find the galaxy.      He is surprised because he had never been smacked before.

4. Why don’t Travis and Adam believe Sam when she said that it was Denzil inside the TV (after he had turned himself into a mouse)?

(Travis and Adam do not believe that Denzil is inside the TV because ….they don’t think he’s a wizard.      √

5. What happened that convinced the MacAllister family that Denzil is a wizard?

(The family know Denzil is a wizard because ….they know the mouse is Denzil.      √

6. Predict: What do you think Denzil is going to do next?

(I think that Denzil is now going to ….run away.      √ AHA

Chapter 11: A Brilliant Performance

1.  Why was Mr MacAllister’s play so good?

(The play was so good because ….Denzil made some of the magic to help.      √

2. Explain why Denzil doesn’t want to go home any more

(Denzil does not want to go home any more because ….it feels like he is being included in the family.      √ Yes - he finally feels that he has a home

(Mrs Utherwise is really a witch because… she is Mother Wyse. Yes

(We find out that it is really Denzil who is going to get eaten by a dragon)      √

Chapter 12: Tuesday

1. What does Mrs Utherwise give to Sam?

(Mrs Utherwise tells Sam that it is Maundy Thursday the day after tomorrow, then it’s Good Friday. This is important to the story because ….he will know when it will be Rue Wednesday.      √

(They find Naoh’s charm …..around Adam’s neck.      √

4. What does Sam say to Denzil to get him to wear the motorcycle helmet?
